With the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, The United States began its hard fought struggle to victory against the forces of Japan. Several major battles took place in the South Pacific over the course of the war, and there are interesting historical sites at most of these locations.

In 1942 on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands chain, The United States won a major victory which essentially turned the tide in the Pacific Theatre. From this point, the US moved from a defensive to an offensive posture against Japan.Additional information can be found at
